Turracher Höhe: An Alpine Gem Between Carinthia and Styria
Located on the border between Carinthia and Styria, the Turracher Höhe is a high-altitude plateau that feels like a hidden Alpine secret. At 1,763 meters above sea level, it is a place where the air is fresh, the lakes are crystal clear, and the hospitality is as warm as a fireplace in a mountain hut.
A glimpse into history
The Turracher Höhe has not always been a playground for skiers. Its history is rooted in mining. For centuries, the region was a hub for the extraction of iron ore and magnesium. It was not until the early 20th century that the first tourists arrived, transported by horse-drawn sleighs. In the 1930s, the first lifts were built, transforming a rugged industrial area into one of Austria’s most beloved boutique mountain resorts.
Experiences and Accommodation
The landscape is dominated by three emerald green lakes - Turracher See, Schwarzsee and Grünsee. In contrast to the massive, bustling mega-resorts, the atmosphere here is intimate and exclusive.
If you're planning a stay, you'll find a charming mix of traditional and modern living. You can book a luxurious Alpine villa perched on a hillside with panoramic views or opt for a ski-in/ski-out apartment right on the slopes. Many of these accommodations have private saunas and sun-drenched balconies, perfect for a cozy vacation. Whether it's a rustic mountain hut or an elegant vacation home, the focus is on "Gemütlichkeit" (coziness).
Nature: The Stone Pine Kingdom
The region is famous for its Zirbe (stone pine) forests. These ancient trees, some hundreds of years old, produce a distinct, soothing scent.
Biosphere Park: It acts as a gateway to the Nockberge mountains, which are characterised by rounded "Nock" peaks rather than jagged cliffs.
Unique flora: In spring and summer, the meadows are a carpet of alpine roses and rare orchids.
Activities: Adventure all year round
Whether the ground is white or green, there is never a dull moment.
Winter: Boasts 42 km of slopes, night skiing and the "Nocky Flitzer" alpine slide. A unique experience is the ski beggar who roams the slopes handing out prosecco and sweets to guests.
Summer: High-altitude hiking is the main attraction. The 3-lake hike is a must for families. You can also try mountain biking or fly fishing in Turracher See.
Gastronomy and Culture
The local cuisine is hearty and designed to fuel a day on the mountain. Look out for:
Zirbenschnaps: A potent liqueur made from pine cones.
Kärntner Kasnudeln: Carinthian cheese noodles filled with a mixture of quark and mint, served with browned butter.
Brettljause: A wooden platter piled high with smoked speck, local mountain cheeses and farmhouse bread.
Festivals and traditions
Stone Pine Festival (Zirbenfest): A celebration of the local tree with crafts, oils and food made from Zirben.
Mountain Spring Festival: To celebrate the flowering of the alpine roses.
Hüttenrallye: A culinary "hut rally" where skiers or hikers move from one hut to the next to try different traditional dishes.
